Creativity always seemed to feature as an important part of my life and I remember being oh so excited when it was art class day at school. Although I ever only painted one painting the teacher liked - and that was on a day I felt angry for some reason. Of doves escaping from an aviary ;-)

Life sent me in a musical direction, completing a Bachelor of Music and Stellenbosch University in South Africa, always wanting to be able to play more instruments (cello being my latest endeavour). I soon found that performance anxiety would be my undoing, so teaching was a way to avoid that while still enjoying the music.

Painting, on the other hand, offered an opportunity for a whole performance (on canvas) and I could 'show' the work afterwards.... no nerves involved! But the composition still stood proud and the music could go on and on.

phantasia

phantasia - acrylic on linen by erika husselmann  When digging your heels into something fantastical, something that you love doing, it's easy to escape into a land of 'phantasia'... where colour is edible and may even suggest a fragrance or a feeling. It sounds like folly and totally doesn't make sense but strangely it may be the essence of that elusive thing that brings me back to painting time after time. So you dive into paints and brushes, and begin 'practising' on this luscious canvas, special, big, linen one. Many layers, as you chop and change and 'work' on building something. Over time it goes through an ugly duckling stage which results in a bit of hair-pulling, self-doubt and lots of unsavoury language which is better left untyped. But by my age I know that keeping going is all that counts. New painting just finished

  Aviana and friends - 102x76x38cm, mixed media by erika husselmann Meet 'Aviana and friends' - the latest work off my easel and the first finished one for 2024/2025. I am happy with this, it consists of layers and layers of paint, done on a recycled linen canvas, stretched and ready to hang. It's happily hanging on my wall for now, drying, waiting for the final coat of satin varnish. Five is the number of the birds in this painting, and also an interesting number indicated by a V in Roman numerals, after I II III IIII which all made sense.  google gives me this: 5 is the first congruent number, as well as the length of the hypotenuse of the smallest integer-sided right triangle, making part of the smallest Pythagorean triple (3, 4, 5). 5 is the first prime, and the first good prime.
